The AMD Krackan is the mainstream series for laptops, which will supposedly be released at CES 2025. Unlike previously thought, the Krackan CPUs might support a 500MHz higher memory clock. This looks on par with what the Strix HALO is expected to support in terms of memory specifications.
Lenovo manager dismantles claims about AMD Krackan using 7500MHz memory
Previous rumors suggested that the upcoming AMD Zen 5-based ‘KRACKAN’ series(formerly known as ‘Kraken’) will feature support of up to 7500MHz of memory clocks. This claim, however, has been debunked by Lenovo Product Manager ‘Think about the future’ on the Weibo forum. He is the same guy who informed us about the delayed launch of the Intel Arrow Lake ‘HALO’ series and confirmed its existence.
According to the product manager, the Krackan Point will support up to 8000MHz LPDDR5X memory. He also dismantled the rumors by users who couldn’t back up their leaks with evidence, specifically those who claimed that the Krackan would support only up to 7500MHz memory speed. Apparently, this is the first time we have heard of such high memory speed support by an AMD mobile series, which puts it ahead of the Strix Point in terms of memory speed even though both use a different standard of memory.
While AMD Krackan won’t be as powerful as the Strix Point, it will compete against Intel’s Core Ultra series. Krackan will most probably max out at 8 cores, combining 4 Zen 5 and 4 Zen 5c cores with an RDNA 3.5 architecture. Unlike Strix Point and Strix HALO, the Krackan will bring just 8 Compute Units. This is why AMD is supposedly planning to aim for the mainstream notebooks with the Krackan and not the high-end gaming notebooks.
The Strix HALO, on the other hand, will be the most powerful in terms of the GPU configuration, featuring up to 40 Compute Units. The Krackan Point will go against the Core Ultra 5 and 7 SKUs from the Lunar Lake series and will focus on power efficiency. Both AMD Krackan Point and Strix HALO are expected to launch at CES 2025, which is going to be held in January but the official confirmation has not been provided by AMD.
