Intel 13th/14th-Gen CPU Owners Report Crashes During Shader Compilation in Black Myth: Wukong

Owning an Intel Raptor Lake/Refresh CPU isn't easy

As usual, Intel’s 13th and 14th-generation processors are creating issues even in the latest popular title Black Myth: Wukong. This isn’t the first game where Intel processors have introduced crashes and it isn’t going to be the last one.

Black Myth: Wukong crashes during Shader Compilation on Intel’s Raptor Lake and Refresh CPU-based systems

Just after the launch of Black Myth: Wukong, several reports about the game crashing were reported by the players to the developer. Black Myth: Wukong is the latest and the most popular title on Steam at the moment with over 2.0 million concurrent players. This also means that there are hundreds of thousands of players who are currently playing the game on an Intel machine. A lot of them are using the latest Intel’s 13th and 14th gen processors, which have created a mess as they often result in instabilities.

These are mostly high-end Core i7 and i9 processors, which have affected gameplay or PC operation in general. The problem has now extended to the Black Myth which has reached the game’s developer Game Science. The developer posted about the issue on Steam forums, acknowledging the problem and also giving some solutions.

Intel’s 13th and 14th-generation CPU owners have complained that the game would crash mid-game or sometimes when the shaders are compiling. During the shader compilation, users are reporting “Out of video memory” error, to which the developer suggested two different solutions:

  1. Downclocking the CPU
  2. Skipping the Shader Compilation

The first method will require users to use overclocking software or BIOS to decrease the clock speeds of their CPUs. This requires users to have a motherboard that supports tweaking the clock speeds. The second method doesn’t require downclocking and users can avoid crashes by skipping Shader Compilation, which is an important feature for the game’s optimizations.

However, despite this, the developer says that,

We can’t guarantee the game will run smoothly. Devices that crash during shader compilation might also randomly crash while playing the game.

So, there we have it. Another issue popped out of nowhere, making difficulties for Intel’s 13th and 14th chip owners. While Intel has already released the micro-code patch for fixing the issue, it doesn’t guarantee a permanent fix for the problem. Moreover, the patch needs to be downloaded through BIOS updates, which means users who are unaware of the problem will keep facing the issue often.
