Nvidia RTX 4070 Confirmed with GDDR6 Memory

The new RTX 4070 GPU will come with GDDR6 memory instead of GDDR6X. A new Galax Geforce RTX 4070 appeared with such a memory configuration, which confirms the rumor of Nvidia producing the RTX 4070 card with slower memory.

The rumor of RTX 4070 being equipped with GDDR6 VRAM is confirmed

Roughly a week ago, it was rumored that Nvidia was working on one of its best graphics cards, the RTX 4070 with a completely different memory type since the GDDR6X VRAM supply is facing a shortage. This rumor started as the RTX 4070 uses GDDR6X memory but due to Micron’s quality checks-failed batch of GDDR6X memory chips, Nvidia’s higher-end cards won’t get enough GDDR6X chips for production. Nvidia has to cut the supply of GDDR6X memory chips somewhere and therefore, it is more feasible to equip the RTX 4070 with GDDR6 memory than higher-end models.

As of today, the rumor has come true. Videocardz reports that Galax has prepared a completely new Geforce RTX 4070 GPU that ditches the GDDR6X memory in favor of GDDR6. This particular card is the Galax RTX 4070 GDDR6 1-Click OC 2X(White LED) edition, which features a dual-fan and dual-slot design. The card will use the newer GPU die: AD104-251 instead of AD104-250. The latter is used on the current Nvidia RTX 4070 card and this change also coincides with the leak by MEGAsizeGPU, who reported that the new card will have a newer SKU(PG141 SKU 347) last week.

However, the rest of the specifications are said to be intact but as the VRAM configuration is changed, the newer card will run at a slightly slower speed of 20Gbps compared to the 21Gbps of the GDDR6X version. This may result in slightly inferior performance but we will have to wait and see how much impact the memory change will have on the gaming performance.

The RTX 4070 has already been taken over by its Super version but the 4070 is still available in the market, selling as the most popular non-Super RTX 40 series card. The shortage of GDDR6X memory will most likely force Nvidia to keep making the RTX 4070 with GDDR6 memory but the shortage isn’t going to last very long. That said, it’s expected that more AIBs will follow Galax in the production of this newer RTX 4070 GPU to tackle the memory shortage.
