Redditor Reports Burnt 16-Pin Connector on the Corsair SF1000, But His RTX 5090 Founders Edition Survives

The burning and melting 16-pin connector reports never end, and every week, we see newer reports emerging, particularly on Reddit, where users usually share their horror stories. Another user got his 16-pin connector melted quite badly, and unsurprisingly, it’s an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 setup where the user connected the cable to a Corsair PSU.

As per the user’s report, he used a Corsair SF1000, which can be seen having two 8-pin connectors, which means it’s not the one that is PCIe 5.1 and ATX 3.1 compliant. Therefore, he got his GPU cable burned pretty badly, along with the connectors. The user says he bought the RTX 5090 FE directly from NVIDIA and had no problem since the installation. However, when he took a look at the hardware for some cleaning purposes, he stumbled upon a “shiny metal” glint coming from the cable that was connected to the GPU.

As expected, the cable had melted, but it was largely one wire. The bigger surprise was the PSU side, which saw a significant cable burn, and as you can see, the braided cable got horribly damaged. After having posted this in the Corsair sub-Reddit, Corsair came quickly to the comments and asked him to make a ticket for “new cables” or a new PSU if he sees any damage to the connectors.

It’s not rare to see vendors in the comments, but considering the plethora of 16-pin connector-burning cases, it’s not something that vendors always pay attention to. Most of the burning issues happen due to the inherent flaw in the connector design, which NVIDIA refuses to fix. Despite releasing the latest 12V-2×6 standard connector, we still see connector melting/burning reports to this day. Thankfully, the user u/Mexiplexi didn’t see any damage on his GeForce RTX 5090 FE GPU, which means he only needs to RMA his PSU.
