NVIDIA RTX 5060 will Feature GDDR7 Memory and will be More Power-Efficient

Blackwell GPUs will consume even less power and have significant performance uplifts

Since the launch of Ada cards, the power efficiency of NVIDIA GPUs has shown us that AMD is far behind. It looks like NVIDIA is taking it one step further with the upcoming “Blackwell” GPU series. This time we have some leaked information about the RTX 5060, which will supposedly bring a faster memory and great performance per watt.

Up to a 20% reduction in power consumption, the RTX 5060 is not only power-efficient but equivalent to the 70-level Ada cards

It has come to our attention that the upcoming ‘Blackwell’ GPU series was discussed in the Weibo forum, where the prominent leaker Golden Pig Upgrade posted a pic of the Chairman of Shenzhen Hasee Computer Co. company. The chairman Wu Haijun had a meeting on the upcoming GPUs where it was mentioned that the NVIDIA RTX 50 series graphics cards will be more power-efficient than the predecessors, i.e., the RTX 40 series GPUs.

As quoted by Golden Pig Upgrade, Wu Haijun said,

The next-generation notebook N card uses GDDR7 video memory, and the power consumption of the 6-levle card is greately reduced, from 140W to 115W.

Apparently, Wu Haijun was talking about the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060, particularly the laptop edition as mentioned. As per the chairman, the power draw will be reduced from 140W to 115W compared to the RTX 4060 laptop GPU. The 4060 laptop GPU is rated at 115W but has a max TDP of 140W, but the RTX 5060 laptop will be reduced to a max TDP of just 115W, making it up to 20% more power-efficient than its predecessor.

Furthermore, Wu Haijun also explicitly said that the Blackwell GPUs will feature GDDR7 video memory, which was also confirmed by a CLEV leak. Currently, Ada cards use either GDDR6 or GDDR6X memory. The RTX 4070 and higher-end cards stick to the GDDR6X while the lower-end use GDDR6. Only recently, due to the shortage of GDDR6X memory, NVIDIA went with the RTX 4070 GDDR6 edition. However, the RTX 50 cards will shift completely to just GDDR7 video memory, which will run at a much higher rate of up to 32Gb/s.

The RTX 5060 is also supposedly equivalent to the RTX 4070 GPU, which is a decent generational uplift. As of now, there is no official information about the launch or specifications of Blackwell gaming GPUs from NVIDIA. There are only a few leaks and rumors but it’s expected that the RTX 50 series will be launched at the end of 2024, making way for slower SKUs in 2025.
