The rumor that the RTX 4070 getting GDDR6 memory replacement is becoming stronger daily. While it hasn’t been declared as official by either NVIDIA or its board partners, we can see that AIBs are working on preparing the newer version of RTX 4070.
Four different RTX 4070 GDDR6 editions registered on EEC
A few days back, it was speculated that Nvidia could be working on a new RTX 4070 model due to the shortage of GDDR6X memory chips. The newer RTX 4070 would feature ‘GDDR6’ memory chips instead to tackle the shortage and now it looks like this plan is coming to reality. Recently, four new editions of the RTX 4070 were registered on EEC(Eurasian Economic Commission) and all of them belong to NVIDIA’s board partner, Gigabyte.
All versions were from the WindForce series, which is obvious from the model names. Even though the memory type is missing from these models, it’s highly likely that these aren’t the regular RTX 4070s with GDDR6X memory. Gigabyte already has several GDDRX6 editions in the WindForce series for its RTX 4070. Therefore, it’s safe to assume that these are the brand new GDDR6-equipped RTX 4070s.

The fourth SKU has been partially omitted on the website since the first time it was spotted by harukaze5719. However, it’s clear that these are “V2” i.e., the second version of the RTX 4070 cards with the WindForce cooling design. They will be either dual-fan or triple-fan designs as the name suggests. Furthermore, each card has a factory-overclocked edition of its own.
Gigabyte hasn’t made any announcements regarding these GPUs but it’s possible that it will in the coming days. According to a few reports, NVIDIA and its partners are ready to ship the card from the 20th of August, which is less than a week away from now. To handle the memory shortage, NVIDIA took this step to keep the supply chain continuous. However, the shortage of GDDR6X memory chips is temporary and NVIDIA will likely revert back to the original RTX 4070 edition.
RTX 4070 with GDDR6 memory will run at 20Gbps of memory speed, which is 1Gbps slower than the original edition. This may result in slightly inferior performance but is most likely going to be unnoticeable in most games and applications. Still, NVIDIA hasn’t announced this publicly and we don’t know whether this will result in any price reductions or not.
Currently, the RTX 4070 is a solid mid-range graphics card, which has been taken over by its Super edition. The RTX 4070 Super is one of the best graphics cards but the RTX 4070 still enjoys good market share. The RTX 4070 comes with 5888 Cuda Cores and 12GB of GDDR6X VRAM on a 192-bit bus and currently sits at around $550. Hopefully, the newer RTX 4070 doesn’t exceed this price range and it would be even better if it costs closer to $500 for the slight nerfs in its memory configuration.
